Watauga High School
Watauga High School is situated on 92 acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The school measures 310,000 SF over 3 stories and features a main gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, media center, band and choral rooms as well as auditorium. The central commons area acts as the core of the building dividing the three classroom wings and main body and housing remote serving kiosks and a full-service kitchen for 1,700 students.
Sustainable design features include a radius roof massing element, concentration of daylighting and the use of highly sustainable materials. The structure is outfitted with energy efficient equipment fixtures including a fully functional geothermal HVAC system. The school was designed to meet the Energy Star criteria based on a 38% reduction in consumed energy.
The project also included a football stadium with running track, soccer stadium, tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, 1000-space parking lot and three separate support buildings.
