High Point Bypass
The High Point Bypass spans 8 miles from North Spencer Road to US220 in Randolph County. The project includes ten bridges structures and called for significant innovation in design. A radical change was made to the interchange where the roadway ties into US220, resulting in considerable savings to the NCDOT on pavement and bridge requirements and reducing the project’s environmental impacts. The mainline grade was adjusted at the existing US311 interchange, moving the roadway under the Norfolk Southern Railway, resulting in a 50-foot lowering of the mainline profile and reducing the project’s borrow requirements. These design and construction innovations allowed the Barnhill+HDR team to bid the project $13 million under our competitors.
