Gold Rock I-95 Interchange Wins 2024 CAGC Construction Excellence Award
February 7, 2025Our Heavy Highway Team was honored to receive the 2024 Carolinas Association of General Contractors 2024 Construction Excellence Award for the Gold Rock I-95 Interchange.
Despite extensive night work, heavy traffic, and even a tornado nearby, Barnhill Contracting Company successfully completed the I-95 Interchange at Gold Rock in Battleboro, North Carolina. Construction began in August 2021 and included the removal and replacement of four aging bridges, transforming the interchange to improve safety and traffic flow. Partnering with Sanford Contractors, Barnhill also installed roundabouts and reconfigured ramps to meet future highway standards.
The project involved over 22,000 tons of asphalt, 3,000 linear feet of storm drain, and significant coordination with NCDOT. A key achievement was determining that existing shoulders met design standards, saving time and reducing disruption for the public. The team also installed 12,000 linear feet of wick drains to stabilize soil for bridge construction—a rare technique for the region.
Barnhill’s commitment to safety was demonstrated through monthly accident-free lunches, which continued without interruption throughout the three-year project. Traffic management was a significant challenge, requiring extensive planning and coordination for seven ramp closures. Concrete paving for two full roundabouts added complexity, but Certified Concrete ensured smooth operations.
Crews demonstrated adaptability by addressing unexpected challenges, such as rebuilding deteriorated detour roads and constructing a temporary wire wall to protect hotel parking. Weather presented additional hurdles, including a tornado that disrupted delivery routes but spared the job site.
Through teamwork, innovation, and effective communication, Barnhill successfully completed the project, enhancing traffic flow, safety, and access to the new CSX hub and Wake Stone Quarry. This complex undertaking stands as a testament to Barnhill’s dedication and grit in overcoming obstacles to deliver superior construction projects.
